Welcome back!
I find it very frustrating at how much the world runs on generalizations. Specifically the generalization of age being equivilent to responsibility, trustworthiness, and dependability! I turned 20 yesterday. I have my own house. All things considered I feel that I have taken on and conquered, so to speak, quite a bit of responsibility for my age! Unfortunately, the world- or neighbors more specifically- doesn’t see it that way.
I got a call from my neighbor early this morning saying last night some one tried breaking into their house. The cops came and alarms went off in their house. I didn’t hear any of the chaos that “supposedly” happened and none of my dogs heard anything either. They thought since we (my roommate and I) were college kids it was us or one of our friends that did that!!!
Though I do understand their concern since their daughter was home alone, I think the fact that their precious daughter is in high school should also be taken into consideration in their rantings to me. As much as I wish I could say this is the first time people have made assumptions about me or my friends because of our age I would be lying if I did. I know it won’t be the last either.
I only take it personally because I know I am only being seen as a “hoodlum” as my Grandma would say when I know I’ve worked hard to be out of that category. I am crushed but still understand where my neighbors are coming from and thankful they believed me!
In the future, I hope the old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” will help you to look beyond the age.
